    It strikes me that this is the kind of question that cannot be
answered based on knowledge of maps alone.  If the question can be
answered at this point in time, it probably would have to depend on
obtaining additional archival information.  The John Muir Archives are
held at the University of the Pacific, and there is an online finding
aid (http://library.uop.edu/ha/muir/find.asp).  The finding aid mentions
that there are some maps in the Muir collection, but does not describe
them.  There also might be some additional clues in Muir's letters and
other papers.
