Hello. A colleague (without Internet, alas) has asked that I post this
request; we are looking for a source of US ZIP codes and corresponding
FIPS State/County codes. Although his request was for a specific ASCII
file containing only those two fields, I'd feel that's asking a bit too
much. Just a dataset that would have such fields on a nationwide
basis would be best (I'll massage the data to get what we need).
With Internet access, you can use the Geographic Name Server at the
University of Michigan for this purpose. I have included an example with my
zip code (22180-4822). The FIPS feature is entry #1 in the response.
Writing a program to access this material using TCP/IP sockets is
straightforward (I should know, I've done some).
You should contact Tom Libert ([log in to unmask]) for more information
regarding availability of the GNS and data itself.
