Call for Papers

We invite you to submit papers for the upcoming workshop related to GI
Science,

Human Computer Interaction and Mobile Computing:

MOBILE MAPS 2005

- Interactivity and Usability of Map-based Mobile Services -

http://www.geoinform.fh-mainz.de/~zipf/mobilemaps/

http://www.carto-tum.de

19. September 2005 - Salzburg Austria

In combination with

MobileHCI 2005, International Conference on Human Computer Interaction

with Mobile Devices and Services.

http://www.mobilehci.org

Workshop Goals and Issues:

Intuitive user interfaces are indispensable for the acceptance of
location-based

services (LBS) and mobile services. Interactive mobile maps (in 2D and 3D)

represent an important type of applications on mobile devices. Various
research

questions concerning interaction paradigms and usability issues of
cartographic

presentations are still open. On the one hand the special technical
restrictions of

mobile devices need to be considered; on the other hand the usage of the
additional

situative information within the mobile environment does offer new
possibilities for

individualizing mobile maps, i.e. their adjustment to the respective
user, current

situation and context.

The workshop attempts to promote interdisciplinary exchange around the
central task

of generating mobile maps in an "optimal" way for different users and tasks.

We invite you to submit novel and unpublished research in the areas
mentioned:

Deadline for long abstracts (2000-3000) words: 10.07.2005

- Review by an international program committee (see below)

- Best papers will be selected for an upcoming book or a special issue
of a journal.

The following categorized questions act as a starting point for the
discussion in the

workshop.

Map interaction, multimedia and extended presentations

- What intuitive interaction mechanisms and modalities (language, sound,

keyboard, mouse, gestures, AR etc.) in which combination are good for mobile

maps?

Call for Papers: Workshop "Mobile Maps 2005" at MobileHCI, Salzburg,
Austria, 19.September 2005

2

- What impact does the choice of the technical interface (PDA, mobile phone,

TabletPC, HMD ...) have on the selection of information and its map format?

What are the ergonomic characteristics of these different devices?

- Which and how multimedia and hypermedia elements can be meaningfully

integrated in mobile maps?

- When are 3D visualization and other map-like presentations meaningful and

helpful on mobile devices?

Context-adaptive generation of maps

- Which user tasks are typically related to mobile maps?

- Which map contents and presentation styles are relevant for which

communication goals and which situative context?

- Which generalization operations are meaningful for mobile maps?

- How far can we categorize and formalize the relevant context factors
for the

generation of maps?

- How much detail on the map is necessary for an adequate interpretation
of the

user

- How do situative/context and user-specific parameters mutually affect each

other?

- Which design strategies are possible to direct the attention of the
user towards

the focus (regarding content and location) of the map the best way?

User modeling for personalized maps

- What are the expectations regarding the appearance of maps related to
sociodemographic

characteristics or cultural background of the users?

- What characteristics are suitable indicators for preferences and
abilities of a

mobile user?

- How can we infer (and weight) user characteristics in a non-intrusive
manner?

- What differences of user behavior and memory load can be caused by the
mobile

usage environment in comparison to the stationary usage environment?

Methodological concerns

- What experiments are suitable for answering the above questions and
how can they

be designed?

- How can individualized cartographic rules and their relative priority
be determined?

- What computing measures can be defined and determined?

Workshop Background

The workshop will be the second one in a planned series of bi-annual
international

workshops on the topic of design and interaction of mobile map-based
applications. The first

one was held 2003 in a national setting within the conference "Mensch
und Computer 2003"

(Human and Computer), Topic: "Interaktion in Bewegung" (Interaction in
movement)

http://www.mensch-und-computer.de/ 08. September 2003, Stuttgart,
Germany, coorganized

with the German Chapter of the ACM and the German "Gesellschaft für
Informatik"

(German Society for Informatics), Department on Human-Computer
Interaction. For

published results see:

Computing

The idea is to improve cross-disciplinary research among these areas
with respect to the

development and design of mobile map-based application.

One day workshop. Accepted contributions will be presented by the
participants.

The agenda will be grouped around the topics mentioned above.

For each contribution there will be additional time for discussion and a
