Hi Ken,

Thanks for the response. We (Dr. Wang Hong and I) were hoping that somebody was working on or had developed some forage models within DSSAT. I wasn't really expecting to find such a thing, but you never know what you'll find unless you ask. But Stuart Rymph put me onto a few good leads and we will check them out as we get time.

Things are good up here. We're finally starting to see some snow, but I don't think it will stick around for long (temperatures are expected to rise to above 0 next week). I'm starting to see the end of the measurements with the LI 8100. I'm now using the long term chamber to monitor when the fluxes actually stop.

On another topic, have you purchased the LI 8100 yet? After working with it for a year, I have found some of its characteristics troublesome. If you want me to send you a list of things I find troublesome, just let me know.

Kelsey,

Unfortunately we have no perennial legume forage models in DSSAT. Nor do we have mixed grass-legume situation modeled. Sorry that we don't have this ready to accomodate you for this need. No one has near-term plans to do this.

I hope you are doing well, and better than the Atlanta Braves. They have flopped this year. No pitchers I think. Their good pitchers are elsewhere, doing fine.

Best regards,

Ken Boote

Subject: Forage Models

Hi all,

We are planning to simulate grassland/forage/pasture using DSSAT. However, we have identified Bahai and Brachiaria grasses as the only forages in DSSAT. Because of the nature of pastures and grasslands we need to simulate these with more than just grasses. They need to include legumes (clover and alfalfa), and grasses as well as small shrubs and forbs. We also need to simulate alfalfa as a single crop. Are there any models within the DSSAT group that simulate these situations? Also, is there anyone developing such a simulation within DSSAT? Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Regards,
