Subject: Map cataloguer, King's Topographical Collection
Map Cataloguer, America & Spanish Empire, King’s Topographical Collection
Applications are invited for this fixed term, full time cataloguing post, part of the exciting K.Top cataloguing and digitisation project.
King George III’s Topographical Collection is one of the best and largest collections of maps and views anywhere in the world, numbering over 50,000 items with international coverage. In it, the material pertaining to North America is of particular importance since it coincides with a period of expansion and British colonial survey mapping, as well as the early years of American independence. The most recent catalogue of the collection dates from 1829 though its manuscript maps and drawings were catalogued in greater detail in the 1840s. However, the catalogue records are brief and often inaccurate, and as a result the material is largely unknown beyond academic historical research circles.
The aims of the post are to catalogue the maps of North America and the Spanish Empire (comprising not only Spain, Gibraltar and Latin America, but also parts of the East Indies and North Africa) to the best international standards and oversee the digitisation of the images.
Salary £24,828 p.a
Fixed term contract until 27 June 2014.
Closing date: 31 July 2013.
