Crop Modeling Post-Doctorate Available

A crop modeling post-doctorate position is available with Drs. K. J. Boote
and J. W. Jones, University of Florida, on grant-funded project, to
evaluate and improve the accuracy of the CROPGRO-soybean model for
predicting growth and yield response to climate change factors.

Post-doctorate Responsibilities: The post-doctorate will aggregate data
sets, evaluate the model, and improve code of the CROPGRO-Soybean model
using four types of data for model evaluation: 1) Controlled-environment
data to verify accurate response to temperature and CO2, 2) Extensive field
data on in-season growth collected in the USA where weather and soil inputs
are available, 3) Data on final yield and maturity from variety trials plus
data from trials on sowing date and sowing density, and 4) Crop reporting
district yields available for soybean-producing areas of the USA. Model
responses to temperature, CO2, water deficit, and ecosystem factors will be
evaluated, and uncertainties of prediction tested with independent
data. Model improvements will be made where necessary. Duties include
summarizing data and writing refereed publications.

Required skills: Ph.D in Agronomy/Crop Science/Biological Engineering
area, including knowledge of crop physiology, statistics, crop energy
balance, and soil water processes. Understanding of whole crop growth
responses to climatic and soil factors is important. Experience with crop
models, programming languages, and large data sets would be a plus.

Position Duration: Position is available now and will remain open until
suitable person is found. The position duration is anticipated to be up to
3 years. Post-doctorate will be paid a competitive salary, depending on
qualifications, but the type position does not include retirement
benefits. This may be an opportunity for 1-year sabbatical.

To Apply: Submit resume, copies of transcripts, and arrange three letters
of reference to be sent to Dr. K. J. Boote, Agronomy Dept., P. O. 110500,
Univ. of Florida, Gainesville, FL. 32611-0500. Have questions? Contact
via E-mail: [log in to unmask], phone 352-392-1811, ext 231, or FAX
352-392-1840. At ASA meetings, leave message at Omni Charlotte Hotel.
