Responding to Dawn Youngblood's impromptu poll.
"It might be interesting to take an informal poll:
"How many drawers high do you stack your map cases? Do you have to use a
ladder to reach the higher ones? If so, does your ladder have a hand rail?"
Cases are currently stacked 4 units (20 drawers) high. I am not pleased
with this for reasons other than ergonomic, but that is another issue.
The ladder I use has a handrail.
It also has spring-mounted casters, so the ladder is stable when one
stands on it. It is light in weight, and easily movable. This is one
of the best investments I made in equipment for the maps collection. It
is useful no matter than height of the user, even for the traditional
15-drawer stack. It and similar are available from Gaylord, Highsmith
and other suppliers. Generically it is a rolling step ladder, four
steps, with safety domes enclosing the casters. It has handrails, and a
rail at the forward side of the top platform step.

Also, our drawers are stacked 5 sets of 5 drawers
high, while I believe most are stacked 4 sets of 5 drawers high. It
might be interesting to take an informal poll:
How many drawers high do you stack your map cases? Do you have to use a
ladder to reach the higher ones? If so, does your ladder have a hand rail?
I hope others can benefit from my experience. I have been doing this
for 10 years without a problem and then... Don't think it can't happen
to you. Be careful up there! Dawn
