There's quite a bit. Dr. Michael Conzen of the University of Chicago
has been doing a lot of research in this field in the last few years.
the "classic" article was written by R. Pearsall Smith in the
Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society back in 1864. And
on, and on. Did you want a descriptive article or
bibliographies/checklists? There are lots of checklists too.

Has anything been written about the United States county atlasees done in the
late 1800s? I believe these started in New England, and then were done for
