DSSAT,
Jim's lint percentage seems appropriate for "hand picked" cotton. Typical machine picking lint percentages vary from 0.30-0.35 with 0.33 kind of an average; stripper harvest lint percentages are lower at about 0.18-0.27 with about 0.23 being an average. Stripper cotton is not used much outside Texas, Oklahoma, or Kansas. The reasons are: 1) hand picking picks little "trash"; 2) pickers get a little more "trash"; and strippers may or may not harvest the "burs" plus even more trash (bark, etc.). FYI.

Ivan,
The cotton yield simulated by the DSSAT cotton model is the seed cotton
yield. The lint to seed fraction is pretty stable at about 0.40. We have
been estimating lint yield as 0.40*seed cotton yield

Subject: cotton yields
Hi DSSAT users,
I am playing with the cotton experiments in DSSAT, and I'm wondering
exactly what yield number is reported. The yields is the sample
experiments (AZMC8901, GACM0305) are in the 3000-4000 kg/ha range.
That's about 2500-3500 pounds / acre if I did that conversion right.
However, the US yield of cotton is only 800-900 pounds / acre according
to USDA production reports. Are the cotton yields in DSSAT referring to
the same yields in the USDA reports?
Thank you for your help,
Ivan
