Dear Dr. Hasegawa

This is a side comment about your question relating to soil temperature with
CERES:
I've had a rather positive experience using a modified (and slightly more
complex) version
of the CERES routine developed and published by Hoffmann et al. [Soil
temperature model for CERES and similar crop models, J. Agron. and Crop Sci.
170:56-65, 1993], from the
University of Kiel, Germany,
I may forward you the corresponding source code if you wish.
With this version, which explicitly implements a Fourier's conduction equation
within
the soil matrix, I obtained root mean square errors of 1 to 2 °C against daily
observations
in several locations in France and in Denmark.Coming back to Ken Boote's
comment, I must admit that in these instances I've used theTAVE and AMP value
of the particular year I was simulating (which makes it easier for the model
to calculate the correct temperature waveform at the bottom of the soil
profile).
The inputs are essentially unchanged compared to the original CERES, except for
a yearly
averaged soil moisture content and thermal conductivity at the bottom of the
profile; using
the field-capacity content for the former and a constant, default value for
the latter is
generally good enough.

Regards,

Benoit Gabrielle
