The international START secretariat has the following position available.
Please contact Dr. Hassan Virji for further information.

The START (post-doctoral) Associate Scientist will cover the following
activities:

1.) Administration of the START Fellowship, Visiting Scientist, and
Guest Lecturer Programs and the Distinguished Young Scientist Awards. (We
anticipate over 50 awards will be made during 1999.) The duties involved
in administering this program would include solicitation of nominations;
correspondence with nominees and referees; maintaining files and
documentation; preliminary review of applications before final selection;
sending award letters, etc. This would probably take about 20-25% of the
Associate's time.

2.) Assistance with implementation of START's major new project,
"Climate Variability and Agricultural Productivity" (CLIMAG). This
project, which START is overseeing on behalf of its sponsoring programs,
IGBP, IHDP and WCRP, will examine how the increased predictive capabilities
for seasonal and interannual climate variability can be coupled with
capabilities of the agricultural crop-modeling community and the needs of
the agricultural managers to enhance global food production. Several pilot
studies are already underway in Asia and Africa and a major conference is
planned for Geneva in the spring at WMO. This conference, and the
resulting publications, would provide the basis for a longer-term major
project of research and demonstration. It has already attracted much
interest from scientists, the policy community and funding agencies.

The START Associate Scientist would be to work with the CLIMAG Steering
Committee in preparing for the project and conference; assist in
identifying relevant background research and researchers; help with
conference organization; edit reports; and develop research proposals in
collaboration with regional scientists for submission to funding agencies.
This activity will probably take 30-35% of the Associate's time.

The remainder of the Associate's duties can be defined after arrival at the
International START Secretariat, based on the Associate's interests and the
Secretariat's needs.

The position is for a year with a possibility of renewal. The compensation
for this position would be in te range of $40,000 (for the year) of which a
portion could be allocated for salary ($40,000) and a smaller portion for
moving expenses ($3,000 including airfare, household moving, temporary
housing) as this would lower the tax burden on the Associate. Health and
other benefits are available to the START staff through an arrangement with
the American Geophysical Union.

The position is available immediately.
