Time to register for your summer staff development.
Horticulture Team will be offering something for everyone - novice to
mentor teacher, you can working one on one with the horticulture or tour
and learn the practices of organic farming, or you can prepare yourself for
pesticide certification or choose to advance your landscape construction
skills.

Horticulture Staff Development for Summer 2005:
CTE 6803: May 15 - Aug 1: Back to Agricutlure Industry: Myron Sellers
This workshop is designed to train and update skills used in Georgia's
vast horticultural industry. Teachers will be paired with professionals
for a supervised occupational experience in greenhouse, nursery,
vegetable and fruit production, and also floral design and landscaping.
Completion of this course will require 32 hours of job shadowing and 8
hours for the creation of a portfolio that describes the work
experience, skills learned, and the application of those experiences
and skills to classroom instructional content.
CTE 6805: May 30 - June 2: Diversified Turfgrass Management: Eddie
McKie, Tifton
The course is designed to supplement the teacher's basic knowledge of
the turfgrass industry and to assist them in more efficiently preparing
their students pursuit for a career in the ever-changing, fast-growing
turfgrass industry. Professionals in the industry as well as
educational researchers and teachers will instruct the teachers in the
new advances in turf production. Older advances and technology as well
as the new advances will be incorporated in the course. The teachers
will be instructed in the methods of related math, science, writing and
communications in their educational plans.
CTE6806: June 8-10th, The Science of Organic Practices in Agriculture:
Teri Hamlin, Athens Area
Sales of organically grown products have tripled since the early 1990's
with annual sales now exceeding $2 billion nationally. The increased
demand for fresh, organically grown produce offers an exciting career
opportunity for Georgia's youth. With the right skills in management
practices and marketing the possibilities for success in the organics
industry are unlimited. This training is designed to connect science
concepts with the fundamentals of organic agriculture. The session will
offer lectures, demonstrations and a guided tour of a working organic
farm. Topics covered will include the following: soil basics and the
elements of soil management (compost, organic inputs, soil tests);
organic pest and disease management; garden planning, design, rotation
and companion planting; business plans, record keeping and marketing;
hands-on techniques for the classroom and school garden or greenhouse.
Participants will receive detailed materials on organic horticulture
developed by Georgia Organics for use in the classroom. Lesson plan
development will supplement curriculum with new units and SAE
descriptions.
CTE6809: June 14-16, Pesticide Basics for Initial Certification, Eddie
McKie, FFA Center
This workshop is designed to assist teachers in the proper usage,
application and disposal of restricted use pesticides. Proper
procedures used in demonstration and resarch of restricted use
chemicals will be presented. Aids to obtaining commercial pesticide
applicators license in both the plan and animal categories will be
included. This workshop is recommended for individuals who do not
currently have a Commercial Pesticide Applicators License.
CTE6810: June 21-24, Landscape Construction - Irrigation, Outdoor
Lighting and Pond Construction, Teri Hamlin, Gwinnett Tech
The number of Georgia landscape construction and maintenance businesses
have doubled in the last five years. Entry level skills have evolved
from the planting of shrubs to hardscape construction. This workshop is
designed for teachers seeking knowledge and skill development in the
maintenance and operation of landscape equipment while practicing the
principles of hardscape construction. Lesson plan development will
focus on the advance landscape management curriculum preparing the
teacher for classroom and lab instruction in the selection; maintenance
and installation of irrigation systems, outdoor lighting and pond
construction.
CTE6812: June 23-25, Floriculture Industry Update, Myron Sellers,
Greenville SC
This teacher educational program will focus on the needs and new trends
of the southern floriculture industry. Visits to local growers and
plant trial gardens will be included. Teachers will also participate in
the Southeast Greenhouse Conference. The conference will provide the
opportunity to attend technical workshops, compare industry products,
talk to industry representatives, observe equipment demonstrations, and
learn about the latest greenhouse crops and supplies.
