Attention: Professionals Needing Ag Ed Teaching Certification
Georgia Agricultural Education is among the most elite and well-respected
programs serving students in the entire nation. Many factors contribute to
this distinction, but the foremost factor is the competence and quality of
agriculture teachers in Georgia. In order to receive maximum compensation
for the hard work and long hours required to achieve this excellence,
agriculture teachers have to be officially “certified” to teach agriculture
in Georgia. Certification for teaching agriculture must come through an
accredited University System of Georgia Institution. The Department of
Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication at The University of
Georgia can help you become certified to teach agricultural education in
Georgia.
If a current or prospective teacher seeking Agricultural Education
Certification has a Bachelor’s degree in some area/field of agriculture,
completing the following tasks will allow certification to take place:
1. Take the GRE if certification courses are to count toward an
advanced degree. Take the following segments of the GRE.
a. Verbal
b. Quantitative
c. Written
2. Apply to The University of Georgia Graduate School (
http://www.gradsch.uga.edu/)
a. When it asks for desired degree write “Master of
Agricultural Leadership” or
b. If for some reason you do not want the classes to count
towards an advanced degree, write “Master of Agricultural
Leadership – Non Degree” on the form.
c. If “non-degree” option is selected a written
explanation for choosing this route must accompany the
application.
d. A $50 application fee should also accompany the grad
school application.
3. Have three references complete and mail in the recommendation
forms that can be found at http://www.gradsch.uga.edu/. These
completed forms should be mailed to Dr. Richard Rohs at 109 Four
Towers, The University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602-4355.
4. Test out of Praxis I (with GRE or SAT score) or pass Praxis
I.
5. Pass Praxis II in Agriculture.
6. Complete a Special Needs course with your local RESA center
or complete EOCS 7750 or SPED 2000 at The University of Georgia.
7. Test out of the Instructional Technology requirement,
complete EDIT 6150 at The University of Georgia, or complete Tech
requirements with your local school system.
8. Register and complete EAGR 6350 (3 hours) and EAGR 6360 (3
hours) during the Summer semester.
9. Acquire an agricultural education teaching position.
10. Register and complete requirements for 12 hours of EAGR 7460,
which includes one full year of supervision by University of Georgia
agricultural teacher education faculty.
11. Apply for Georgia Agricultural Teacher Certification.
You must contact Dr. Ricketts ([log in to unmask]) as soon as possible if you
would like to begin the certification process. Remember - before the
summer semester begins, you still have to be admitted to the grad school,
take the GRE, and register for classes.
EAGR 6350 and EAGR 6360 will be taught by distance and through traditional
face-to-face instruction. See the following schedule below.
