I have posted a digitized copy of the recent NRA versus PETA debate on a
website that I manage. In this video, Wayne LaPierre of the NRA exposes
PETA for their lack of concern for humans and their link to terrorist
groups.
I am forced to monitor downloading so that we don't exceed bandwidth.
If you want to download this from the website, email me for the link.
Please be aware that the video is of VERY LOW resolution and you will
need to download it instead of watching it from the internet. Just
email for the link and instructions if you are interested.
thanks,

PETA ( The People For Ethical Treatment of Animals ) recently attacked
a
north Georgia ag ed program on their national web site ( www.peta.org )
for using a fistulated Hereford steer in school classes in a suburban
Atlanta school system . The local teacher borrowed 'Brutus' , a 1500
lb.
steer in mid September , from the UGA Animal Science department to use
in
agriscience classes . The fistulated steer had been used in digestion
research trials at UGA more than six years ago and now enjoys his own
paddock at UGA . He was a big hit in the local ag classes including
science classes . School adminstrators also said it was the best hands
on
learning activity they had seen as students removed rumen material and
did
various scientific experiments under the direction of their local ag
teacher . The local newspaper did a feature article on Brutus and was
highly complimentary of the local teacher . The local paper was an
on-line
paper and in about a week PETA had picked the story up and made it a
front
page story on their web site claiming animal cruelty . It also attacked
ag
ed and FFA nationally as a violator of animal rights . Within a few days
the local teacher , principal and supt. were beseiged with emails from
every corner of the globe .
The local teacher and all others involved ignored everything they
received via email , fax and mail . A response would have been just what
these folks would want and then you are faced with a verbal war on your
hands . I bring this to your attention because this could happen to any
ag teacher and program in Georgia , rural or urban . Always be careful
when handling any animals and teach a lesson on the proper way to handle
animals in a humane manner, whether it's small animals or large animals
.
For those involved with vet science classes this should certainly be
stressed in all units . Remember you never know who's watching . For
example , some states no longer have herd health programs conducted by
Extension personnel that involve castration and dehorning because they
are
usually advertised in the local media and people show up that aren't
livestock producers and create problems claiming animal cruetly . These
programs are also no longer done in Georgia for this very reason .
I just wanted you to be aware of this and how it was handled .
Situations could also arise at livestock shows and actually have and a
good plan of action that you have reviewed with your exhibitors and
parents will go a long way to prevent problems from occuring .
