Posted on the agriculture education website are the results from 2003 State
Horticulture CDEs.
Immediately following the events is the time to reflect on how we can
improve the quality of these events.
Several teachers have made the below suggestions. If you participate in the
horticulture CDEs, take time to send your input in making changes to rules
for the events. The attached sheet is designed to give you the opportunity
to make recommendations in changing, adjusting, and/or clarifying rules
related to specific CDEs. You may also use this process for suggesting
additions of new CDEs or leadership events. Please provide specific
wording, not simply "___ needs improvement." Complete a different form for
each rule change. Please consider this a significant opportunity to have
input on these activities.

(See attached file: CDE Rules.suggestion form.rtf)

Teacher Suggestions To Date:

1. Add Equipment to ID list on Floral Design, Floriculture, Nursery
Landscape. ( i.e.: Floral Design: pick machine, glue gun, floral wire.
Floriculture: Combo of Floral Design Tools and Greenhouse related tools
like water breaker, hozon, sprayers. Nursery Landscape: use list on
national FFA CDE)

2. Nursery Landscape: Change Cleyera Japonica to Japanese Ternstroemia,
industry made this change several years ago and "Cleyera" is no longer the
common name for Ternstroemia gymnanthera

3. Nursery Landscape and Floriculture Change minutes of the Written Exam
from 30 mins to 25 mins:
This would make the Exam 25 mins, Plant ID 25 mins, Land Practicum 20
mins, Disorder 15 mins, Problem Solving 20 mins.

4. Floral Design: Only flowers on plant identification will be used as
plant materials in the arrangements.

5. Junior Floriculture and Nursery: References need to be added to Junior
event rules.

6. Problem Solving: To assist teacher and students in preparing for problem
solving. A bank of example problems will be posted on the aged web for
current year. Area and State problems will be representative of the
example pool.

7. Floral Design: Provide teachers with a list of the plant material that
will be used for the contest.
The lilies were not on the state ID list, and we never practiced with them
because I didn't think they could be used.

8. Floral Design: Would it be possible to keep the score sheets so the
students could see their results by each judge, we do this at the area
events and it is very helpful to the students to know what they did well on
and what areas they need to improve on. State judges need to give more
feedback to students on their arrangements like they do at area
competitions.

9. Nursery Landscape, Floriculture and Floral Design:
Add the National CDE interview and/or sales component to the "state" CDE.
At area competition there may too many teams to be able to do this in a
competition held after school but at state competition on a Saturday it
could be added and you could use industry representatives from each area to
be the judges.
