Workshop Participants:
I sent a notice earlier about the Forestry Skills workshop, but I don't
know if it went out or not. Anyway, the workshop will begin on May 30,
2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Camp John Hope. We will leave by charter bus at
10:30 a.m. on a field trip to the arboretum in Brasselton. Here we will
cover tree, wildlife, and fish id along with predator control. We will
visit the BASS Pro Shop later that evening to see some of the actual fish
that are in their aquariums along with all the products they have to help
control the populations of wildlife and fish. Wednesday we will be doing
lab work at Camp John Hope in the areas covered in the Forestry CDE. At
2:00 p.m. DNR personnel will visit with us and we will do a population
study of the lake. We will be pulling a seine, so be prepared to get wet.
We will continue with field work until 5:00. There will be an optional
class on fish identification later that afternoon. You will need to bring
some fishing tackle to participate in this. The next day we will be back
in the woods starting at 8:00 a.m. I hope to finish by 1:00 on Thursday.
You will need to bring a clinometer, d-tape, logger's tape, 10-factor
prism, land measuring compass, ruler, quadrant compass, bug spray and
clothes you don't mind getting dirty. If you want to become more familiar
with a GPS unit, bring it and we will go over how to use it on Wednesday
night. If you want to stay at the camp, you need to contact Virgil Blalock
about a room or there are plenty of rooms available in Perry. I look
forward to seeing you on May 30.
