The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and the Center for
Urban Agriculture on the Griffin Campus are proud to bring you Green
and Growin' Year Round
A series of Fall Workshops, exclusively designed to help you learn and
enjoy the wonderful world of plants in a relaxed and creative
environment! From colorful annuals and perennials to culinary herbs
and medicinal plants, the hands-on workshops will delve into container
gardens, seed and vegetative propagation, hobby greenhouses, healing
gardens, aromatherapy, and much, much more!
September 12, 2008, 9am – 3pm: FABULOUS CONTAINERS HANDS-ON
Container gardens at their best! Learn how to create a stunning mobile
garden, an outdoor floral arrangement, or a striking "living
sculpture". Your home and garden will not be complete without at least
one of these! Learn what the experts call 'thrillers, fillers, and
spillers' and go beyond. Annuals, perennials, grasses, succulents,
tropicals, herbs, veggies, shrubbies and woodies – no plant is off
limits! You will be challenged to build your own creation using a wide
variety of plant material that will be available at your fingertips.
The endless possibilities of "contained gardens" will be yours to
explore! After a day of fun and learning, you can take your creation
home and let it grace a patio, deck or garden.
September 19, 2008, 9am – 3pm: HERB ACADEMY HANDS-ON
Celebrate the healing power of herbs! From the culinary delights of
thyme, sage, and bay, to the medicinal Echinacea, Goldenseal, and St
John's Wort, we will explore the history, biology, chemistry, and
common uses of these wonderful gifts of nature. You will learn many
easy-to-grow, easy-to- use medicinal herb plants that will enhance any
existing garden or provide the focus for a new perennial bed.
Chamomile, yarrow, lemon balm, calendula, feverfew, and peppermint are
just a sampling of the possibilities. We've included hands-on
techniques on how to grow, harvest, preserve, and blend herbs to make
herbal preparations such as flavorings, teas, and salves. Gardening
enthusiast or seasoned connoisseur, you will also learn to use
essential oils to heal, uplift, enhance and balance for health and
well-being.
September 26, 2008, 9am – 3pm:
PLANT PROPAGATION AND HOBBY GREENHOUSES HANDS-ON
Multiply your garden favorites using seeds and cuttings! We will talk
about the fundamental principles of plant propagation, from basic seed
and cutting physiology, to methods and techniques in rooting
perennials and woody plants, and the essential details of setting up a
successful propagation setup. Learn how to propagate Georgia's "best
of the best" ornamentals, the Georgia Gold Medal winners. We will give
you an opportunity to propagate native Georgia plants to spice up your
plant palette. Best of all, there will be plenty of actual exercises
to get your fingers dirty—and you can take home a load of cuttings and
seeds when you leave! We will also talk about hobby greenhouses; from
structures, to irrigation, misting, heating, cooling, and lighting, to
growing media and fertilizers.
