I recall being told at some point that USGS had a database of not only all editions, but all reprint dates. I assumed this was for all geographic areas. Perhaps someone from USGS could confirm whether I am remembering correctly and determine if the edition total could be extracted from it and made public.

I don't have any way to get a correct answer but the methodology proposed below--count all for Oregon and assume the revision rate is similar for the other states--is inaccurate, for the states have widelyy different rates of revision and Oregon has a low rate. I could probably have guessed based on the Western states by looking at the collection, but it's out of the building and in Salt Lake City at the moment. So I don't have any good way to guess. In my opinion, there are 55,000 current 7.5 minute 1:24,000 sheets and about half again as many superceded editions. About 80% of all the topos have never been revised and only a small number have had multiple revisions, usually the urban areas in the past and the Forest Service areas more recently. If I was a betting man (and this is like betting how many coins are in a big glass jar) I would say there have been about 80,000 7.5 minute maps printed by USGS, not including limited revisions and reprints with minor margin no!

I have an inventory of all editions of Oregon. If I did a little
algebra and we assume that every state got revisions at about the same
rate, I could come up with a national guestimate.

Let me know if you want me to pull out my sliderule.
