Do you manage digital collections for public access? Need a no-cost
way to drive users to your website? Want to get your CONTENTdm or
OAIster metadata available via WorldCat? How can you get started? Learn
about OCLCıs Digital Collection Gateway
<http://www.oclc.org/gateway/default.htm> .

And if you're attending American Library Associationıs Midwinter meeting
in San Diego, please plan to join us on Sunday, January 9th, from 3:00
4:30pm at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel, across from the San
Diego Convention Center. (Stop by the hotel front desk to ask for the
OCLC Blue Suite.) Geri Ingram, OCLC Digital Collection Services, will
host special guest, Jen Palmentiero, Southeastern New York Library
Resources Council, for a live demo harvesting SENYLRC repository
metadata to WorldCat using the Gateway. This will be an informal get
together where you can learn about the Gateway, discuss best practices
for sharing OAI metadata, and see the self-service metadata mapping
function in action.

Please let us know if you-- or a colleague--are able to attend:

Hereıs some background on the Gateway ...

By now itıs well known that searchers expect not only to discover, but
also to take delivery of digital items at their desktops. Though
libraries and archives are assembling digital content in the form of
institutional repositories and other locally unique materials,
researchers often overlook these local resources and go directly to
electronic journals or disciplinary collections that span institutions.
Archivists, curators and librarians are responding by increasing the
visibility of their digitized collections at the network level. Starting
with OAIster repositories and CONTENTdm collections, OCLC and the open
access community are working to build the worldıs premier aggregation of
metadata indexed in one place for global open
access. By uploading your metadata through the WorldCat Digital Gateway,
you are developing a premier resource for digital primary source
materials. OCLC's goal is to provide the infrastructure, services and
support to help maximize the visibility and integrated discovery of
digital content worldwide.

The Gateway is free and is a self-service tool that allows you to
control the mapping profiles appropriate for your own OAI-PMH sets. You
also control the schedule for regular harvests of your metadata, and can
perform other routine maintenance tasks. To date, more than six million
metadata records have been absorbed into Worldcat.org through the
WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway. The translation feature of the
Digital Collection Gateway is unique because it provides you with a
click-through interface to customize a translation from Dublin Core to
MARC. This design provides a pathway by which metadata can evolve over
time, and thus bridging some of the gap between traditional library
metadata and newer standards.
