For simulation purposes leaf is only leaf blade in maize. Sheaths are part of the stem. We do know this is wrong from an histological point of view, but blades are mostly responsible for light capture and CO2 assimilation, so it works for our purposes.

I think the right thing is: leaf  weight = blade + sheath
