POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE: MESOSCALE METEOROLOGICAL MODELING

Background
The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the University
of Georgia has an extensive research and extension program in
agrometeorology that involves an interdisciplinary team of scientists.
Routine surface and soil observations are collected across many
locations in Georgia as part of the www.Georgiaweather.net. These
observations are used for agricultural and environmental applications.
Efforts are also underway to incorporate a weather prediction component
based on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for the
agricultural and environmental decision making such as frost prediction
and pest population/disease prediction, irrigation scheduling, etc. A
post-doctoral research associate is needed to conduct model predictions
and evaluation of the WRF model with mesonet data and to develop a
decision support system.

Requirements
A Ph.D. in Meterorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Agricultural Engineering,
Environmental Engineering or equivalent is required. Advanced knowledge
of numerical modeling and numerical weather prediction and experience
using mesoscale models such as WRF is essential for this position.
Demonstrated skills in analyzing large datasets from model outputs,
generating verification statistics, application of statistics in model
evaluation and a good understanding of the atmospheric processes in the
models are necessary. The incumbent will be responsible to process and
interpret meteorological data for use in the WRF Model for regional down
scaling, conduct model simulations using the WRF modeling system for
case studies, and evaluate model output for a variety of environmental
and agricultural applications. Excellent computer and programming
skills with personal computers and workstations are expected. Advanced
knowledge of Unix/Linux computing environments, skill in programming
(Fortran and/or C) and scripting languages (Python and/or Perl), and
graphical display programs and WRF visualization tools is necessary.
Good oral and written presentation skills of technical and scientific
material are essential. The candidate must also be willing to work
effectively with a team of scientists to complete interdisciplinary
projects, formulate proposals and participate in local and national
science meetings/conferences.

Availability
This position is available immediately and will remain open until
filled. The University of Georgia provides excellent benefits for
post-doctoral research associates.

Location
The position will be housed in the Department of Biological and
Agricultural Engineering on the Griffin Campus of the University of
Georgia. Griffin is conveniently located approximately 35 miles south of
the Atlanta International Airport.

Application
If you are interested in this position, please e-mail your resume, a
copy of your transcripts and names and contact information of at least
three references to Gerrit Hoogenboom. Please also include a cover
letter that states how your experience and background meet the
requirements of this position.
