Hi all,
Drought conditions have exposed miles of beach and lake bottom creating amazing mudflats throughout much of North Central Texas (Dallas area). Lake Lavon is twelve feet low and a quick scouting trip of the area revealed twenty of each Yellowlegs sp., a distant fly-by flock of approx. 40 peeps, and hundreds of Killdeer. Lake Tawakoni in Rains County is looking fantastic, seen between July 1st and July 8th were
(high counts given, birded on 1st, 2nd, and 8th)
Piping Plover - 1 banded adult
Snowy Plover - 4 (family group)
Western Sandpiper - 5
Lesser Yellowlegs - 6
Short-billed Dowitcher -2
Willet - 2
Least Sandpiper - 20
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 20
Killdeer - hundreds
Other species of note which help indicate habitat type
Least Tern - 15+
Black Tern - 35+
Forster's Tern - 80+
Ring-billed Gull - 4
Bald Eagle - 1 (July 8th)
Peregrine Falcon - 1 (July 8th)

p.s. Greg Cook, another area birder, had recorded 14 species of shorebirds by July 8th, this fall should be spectacular for shorebirds in NCTX
