Hi,
In the '80s Manomet's International Shorebird Survey noted a large decline
in sanderling from surveys at migratory stopovers, and we obtained
corroborating evidence from their biggest wintering ground, which is in coastal Peru and
Chile. There were several speculative hypotheses proposed for the causes,
but none emerged as most likely.
Manomet currently lists sanderling as in decline, but I haven't seen their
data recently.
With best wishes,
Pete Myers
