OFFICER (CLIMATE CHANGE)

GRADE LEVEL: P-3
DUTY STATION: Rome
ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT: Environment, Climate Change and Bioenergy Division, NRC
Natural Resources Management and Environment Department
DURATION: Fixed Term: 3 years with possible extension

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the general supervision of the Director, NRC, and the direct
supervision of the Senior Officer, Co-ordinator of the Climate Change Team,
will contribute to the division’s work on climate change, impact assessments
and environmental monitoring. In particular will:
▪ perform data analyses, such as spatial interpolations, statistics and GIS
modelling, in relation to food security support systems (GIEWS), natural
resources, climate impact scenarios, biomass potential estimations, etc.; ▪
assist, and provide technical guidance, on content management, quality
control, data safety and user requirements regarding historical climate time
series and future scenarios; ▪ coordinate operations, maintenance,
development and upgrading of climate data infrastructure and tools; ▪
participate in field projects and national studies on climate variability,
biomass production potential and climate change impact assessments related to
food security and environment; ▪ define and develop information products
related to climate variability and impact for dissemination through internet
and other media, and take responsibility for the preparation of related
publications; ▪ directly supervise the statistical clerk and provide ad-hoc
supervision of and liaison with consultants; ▪ perform other related duties
as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:
▪ University degree in geography, agronomy, climatology, or related fields ▪
Five years of relevant experience in climatic and remotely sensed data
processing and information systems management, computer communication and
website management ▪ Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and
limited knowledge of one of the other two

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:
▪ Extent of knowledge of environmental and climatic data and information
management and level of scientific data processing skills, including
programming ▪ Extent of knowledge of current trends in scientific data
processing solutions, including web and open-source, and GIS and
geostatistics ▪ Good understanding of climate change adaptation and
mitigation issues ▪ Quality of both oral and written communication skills ▪
Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member ▪ Demonstrated
Initiative and ability to deliver results within deadlines ▪ Extent of
linguistic skills in the official languages of FAO: Arabic, Chinese, English,
French, Russian and Spanish Please note that all candidates should possess
computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people
of different national and cultural backgrounds.
* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established
in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of
appointments

REMUNERATION
Level P-3 carries a net salary per year (inclusive of a variable element for
post adjustment) from USD 90,526 to USD 113,844 (without dependants) and from
USD 96,981 to USD 122,395 (with dependants)
