Dear Colleagues of Crop Improvement, Crop and Soils Management and=20
Information Technology Management,
 
The Crop and Grassland Service (AGPC) of the Food and Agriculture=20
Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is exploring ways to work with=20
partners both within FAO and outside of FAO to strengthen information=20
acquisition and distribution concerning improved crop, soil and water=20
management technologies for enhancing sustainable agricultural =
production=20
systems.
 
To this end, a new post is being created in AGPC for a Cropping Systems=20
Agronomist with experience in developing country agriculture and having =
a=20
strong orientation toward modern information management. =20
 
The purpose of the this communication is to =B9informallydl announce the =
post so=20
that qualified individuals can request the official announcement when it =
is=20
released for application and to determine to what degree such  =
=B9hybriddl=20
individuals (having experienced in Tropical Agronomy/Plant Breeding and=20
Modern Information Systems)  actually exist  -who might be qualified and =
 
interested in such a post in Rome when it becomes open most likely =
within the=20
next year.

The draft Terms of Reference for the Post follow below:  =20
 
POST DESCRIPTION:  CROPPING SYSTEMS AGRONOMIST-INFORMATION MANAGEMENT =
EXPERT
General Statement:
The incumbent will: Provide information and advice to member governments =
on=20
means to enhance sustainable crop production systems; provide leadership =
for=20
development of Modern Information Management systems related to crop=20
management technologies to be developed in partnership with staff from =
FAO=20
and other institutions; provide leadership for electronic conferences to =
be=20
created and managed on selected topics regarding crop improvement and=20
management; synthesise information on cropping systems management and =
related=20
information systems; develop training materials related to integrated =
crop=20
management; perform other related duties.
 
Specifics:
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Officer leading the Field =
Food=20
Crops Group and under the overall direction of the Chief of the Crop and =
 
Grassland Service, the incumbent will perform a range of tasks to =
strengthen=20
the Agricultural Department's capacity to provide timely information of =
the=20
highest quality on integrated crop management technologies. The =
incumbent=20
will:
Acquire existing data bases on crop production and related technologies =
and=20
develop a user-friendly information management system with a GIS =
linkage;
Coordinate through joint planning sessions the efforts of partners e.g., =
AGP,=20
AGL, AGS, IAEA, IARCs, NARES, NGOs, etc.) involved in developing the=20
Compendium of Crop Production Technologies;
Select and direct the Monitors of electronic Newsgroups which are to be=20
established for interactive information exchanges on crop production=20
technologies;
Prepare reports synthesising information on cropping systems management =
and=20
on the status of the related integrated information system;
Provide advice to member governments on means to enhance sustainable =
crop=20
production systems;
Advise on the strengthening of electronic information exchange =
capabilities=20
in developing countries for use by agricultural research and development =
 
experts including NGOs;
Prepare training materials and other hard-copy publications on crop=20
management systems;
Lead development in AGP of on-line information exchanges and fora on =
improved=20
management systems;
Perform other related duties.
 
EXPERIENCE
Seven years of progressively responsible and professional experience in =
crop=20
management technologies with experience in agricultural development in =
the=20
tropics and/or subtropics including developing countries;=20
Extensive experience in computer use related to data base development,=20
spreadsheets, and word processing;
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team as well as take=20
responsibilities for tasks with minimal supervision
