The Instituto Superior de Agronomia of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa through the Centro de Botânica Aplicada à Agricultura (CBAA) needs a research assistant - research grants (BI) of FCT http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/ - to work in the project “SIAMVITI - Climate change in Viticulture: Scenarios, Impacts and Adaptation Measures”. The grantee may be a Ph.D. candidate at Instituto Superior de Agronomia / Universidade Técnica de Lisboa.

The project objectives are to describe and quantify the impacts of climate change on Portuguese viticulture as well as evaluating possible adaptation measures. 

The partners are the Laboratório de Sistemas, Instrumentação e Modelação em Ciências e Tecnologias da Terra e do Espaço (SIM) of Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FC/UL), the Centro de Investigação em Ciências Geo-Espaciais (CICG) of Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto (FC/UP) and Agri-Ciência, Consultores de Engenharia, Lda. The Project is financed by the PTDC/FCT and the contract is regulated by the Regulamento da Formação Avançada e Qualificação de Recursos Humanos of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.(English)

Tasks

The research assistant will: develop, adapt, calibrate and validate a grapevine development and yield model; compile extensive historical experimental data; supervise field experiments in different viticultural regions with intensive soil-weather-crop monitoring; and process climatic data for future scenarios.

Requirements

A M.Sc. in Agricultural Sciences/Engineering or equivalent is required. 
The candidates should have:
- strong interest in process-based mathematical crop models and data processing
- very good written and spoken English skills
- team skills
- multidisciplinary skills
Preference will be given to candidates with specific experience in viticulture and/or crop modeling.
 
Evaluation criteria
The evaluation will take into consideration the academic merit, the curricular profile and the research experience. An interview may also be necessary.

Grant conditions
The duration of the grant will be 35 months, starting January 2010, with exclusivity.
