3. Contemporary Media Society Meeting
Tuesday, February 9 at 5:30 PM
New Tate Student Center Building Room 473

Come get involved in upcoming events and gain valuable connections, build your portfolio, and
learn what's going on beyond the walls of the Dodd in the media art field!

The Contemporary Media Society (CMS) is a new, student-run organization that is an extension of
the Art X: Expanded Forms Program. CMS provides members with opportunities to explore art and
digital media outside the classroom by engaging in a variety of programs, events, and other
activities related to the interdisciplinary arts.

The Contemporary Media Society upcoming events and activities include: The 6x6 Media Art
Competition at Cine, various applicable workshops, and media-inspired film screenings.

CMS also aspires to give back to the University community through the arts by hosting a variety of
digitally-based and interdisciplinary art workshops. These workshops will reach out to other
students of different majors and artistic backgrounds, allowing them to gain insight and learn
more about the digital arts. Our goal is to unite students of all art and media programs here on
campus.

4. ICE-Vision: In A Lonely Place (Nicholas Ray, 1950)
Thursday, February 11 at 8 PM
Lamar Dodd School of Art Room S150

Film Studies major Will Stephenson continues ICE's informal weekly series, selecting a variety of
world cinema classics and subcultural curiosities.

"With his weary romanticism, Humphrey Bogart was made for Nicholas Ray, and together they
produced two taut thrillers (the other was Knock on Any Door). In this one (1950, 94 min.), Bogart
is an artistically depleted Hollywood screenwriter whose charm is inextricable from his deep
emotional distress. He falls for a golden girl across the way, Gloria Grahame, who in turn helps
him face a murder charge. The film's subject is the attractiveness of instability, and Ray's self-
examination is both narcissistic and sharply critical, in fascinating combination. It's a breathtaking
work, and a key citation in the case for confession as suitable material for art. 94 min." -Dave
Kehr (Chicago Reader)

5. ATHICA: Athens Institute for Contemporary Art, Inc. presents:
The CJ Boyd "Sextet" with local Killick opening on H'arpeggione
Thursday, February 11 at 7 PM
$6.00 Suggested donation (but no one turned away for lack of funds.)

Athens' own Killick opens with an improvisation on a unique stringed instrument, the
H'arpeggione.

C.J. Boyd has released 10 records in the last decade, including three solo records filled with layers
of bass guitar and double bass, and others ranging from prog rock to hip hop. While he is
primarily known as an electric bass guitarist, this year sees him playing more double bass in the
Sextet, which has opted for an entirely acoustic sound based on the approach of a chamber
orchestra.

Dominique Hamilton will lend her soulful viola stylings to the group. She plays regularly in the
Skekses and Winkawerken, and performs with other St. Louis artists and bands whenever possible,
including the now defunct Holy Holy Holy.

Nicholas Slaton is a musician and composer based in Raleigh, NC. Nicholas has been playing
professionally for over ten years, doubling on acoustic and electric bass. His playing has been
described as "a perfect mix of street and school." Recently he has been primary focused on his
solo project, Slicnaton, composing dark, ambient music with techniques including "no input"
electronics.

For more information and samples of the sextet's recordings: http://www.cjboyd.com/

Killick, of Athens, Georgia explores the edges of possibility in sound with the H'arpeggione, an
18-string plucked and bowed hybrid by California luthier Fred Carlson. Balancing sonic focus with
temporal openness, Killick guides deep into the heart of beauty to access ancient knowledge,
following the muse where the spirits roam. His music is Appalachian Trance Metal, a dynamic
body/soul/mind system.

ATHICA: Athens Institute of Contemporary Art is pleased to host Bloodlines: Stories & Poems of
Love & Family, the third VOX Reading Series event at ATHICA, during which local creative writers
theme-specific reflections enhance the discourse around a current ATHICA exhibition.

The VOX evenings of original prose and poetry readings have been enjoyed immensely at the two
similar previous events ATHICA has hosted; Headlines: News-themed Stories and Poems during
this falls "Free Press in Free Fall" exhibit and Love Lines during last springs Crafting Romance
exhibit. Once again VOX organizers Matt Forsythe, Andy Frazee & Ida Stewart have curated a bevy
of works; no piece will run longer than ten minutes, and many run shorter.

serves to bring both emerging and established writers to Athens, as well as to provide a stage for
