POST DOCTORAL FELLOW
Cropping Systems Modeller

A$45K - A$50K + Superannuation

PLANT INDUSTRY
Centre for Mediterranean Agricultural Research
Floreat Park, Perth WA
Australia

CSIRO OFFICER LEVEL 4

Reference No PG111/60
CSIRO Plant Industry is conducting systems research to improve the
competitiveness and sustainability of crop production in Western Australia. New
initiatives are aimed at water and nutrient management in crop rotations. We
are seeking a person to join a highly motivated multidisciplinary team
researching issues on sustainable and profitable crop production.

The appointment will be until July 2002 with the possibility of an extension
for a further 12 months. To be eligible for appointment to this position, you
must have completed your PhD within the last three years.

This project will produce a quantitative explanation of the relations between
drainage, nitrate leaching, crop growth and grain yield taking into account
climatic variability, crop-soil interactions and different farming systems in
Western Australia. The role will involve integrating disciplinary research in
crop physiology, soil science, simulation modelling and systems analysis to
provide beneficial outcomes for industry and the community. The focus will be
on developing on-farm management strategies for enhanced profitability but also
accommodating goals of maintenance of soil and water resources and minimising
potential adverse environmental impacts from crop production.

The position will involve considerable collaboration with scientists from
Agriculture Western Australia as well as other divisions within CSIRO. You
will be encouraged to present results of experiments to farmers and others
scientists through presentation of seminars and publications.

You will develop management strategies to optimise water and nitrogen-use that
have both profitability and environmental benefits, and the appointee will have
both experimental and modelling skills.

The Selection Criteria and Duty Statement may be obtained by telephone (08)
