I just watched a Netflix rental DVD of The True Glory,
a 1945 UK-US propaganda documentary, covering
"from D-Day to Berlin." It has impressive photography
and embarrassing, borderline hysterical narration. It
also has commentary by troops, some of which sounds
genuine, some phony.

One comment is by an unidentified American officer
who was in charge of getting tactical maps to combat
units. He says that during the rapid American advances
after the breakout from Normandy, every time he was
ready to get the maps for a French city to troops, his
efforts were useless because the troops had moved
on to somewhere else. Finally he prepared maps of
Paris -- which the U.S. army bypassed. His last words
in the film are, "I'll be glad to get back to the Library of
Congress, where maps have a permanent value."
