A few years ago, I did a detailed comparison of various pedotransfer functions, which was first presented as a poster on the modeling conference in Florence, Italy, in July 2001 and then published as Gijsman A.J., Jagtap S.S., Jones J.W. 2002. Wading through a swamp of complete confusion: how to choose a method for estimating soil water retention parameters for crop models. European Journal of Agronomy, 18: 75-105.
It is quite a surprising title, but it really reflects how the situation was, as it was a mess. Many published papers had plain errors or were published various times, but with different equations. The equation DSSAT used until v3.5 also proved inaccurate; which one is used now by v4.0, the programmer of Ag&Bio Eng. at Univ. Florida (Oxana) can tell you.
