We have had great success for about 20 years using fishing rod tubes.
They are made of durable plastic and have ends with twist off caps. The
normal length of about 30" works for most maps but we also have the
extendable ones that go to twice that length. The diameter is such that
you can fit several maps into the tube but we also have a larger
diameter choice with extendable length. We found that the cardboard
tubes just didn't hold up to the wear and tear, nor did the maps.
