John,
Sorry for the delayed reply .
We have around 640 in our online catalog. I'm guessing that there may be a few that haven't been cataloged yet (cataloging has been somewhat scattershot), or cataloged with a stmt of responsibility that doesn't indicated OSS (because sometimes just the division, etc., is indicated on the map, not the service as a whole).
We decided to go ahead and start a digitization project because we currently have the resources and they were looking for relatively straight-forward digitization projects. I thought I should take advantage of the opportunity.
I think it would be great for other places to fill in gaps, although it sounds like our collection is on the larger end of the spectrum.
One problem I see with a coop project where each institution takes a group of countries is that I don't see any way of a particular repository knowing if they have all the maps from this or that country. Is there a way of knowing? There will necessarily be gaps that will need to be filled, I would think.
Perhaps since we're currently fortunate to have the resources to move on this, I think quickly once we start, later this year, then we can do it and then other places can try to fill in gaps. The slower part may be the interface to get these online, so I welcome suggestions, although we're thinking about it already.
