Hello,
I work in the Archives at the Winona County Historical Society (MN),
I’m wondering if you have any contacts or resources for finding more
information on a Winona County plat map published in 1878 by Briggs &
Falconer. In 1878, Briggs & Falconer also published a plat book for the
nearby Wisconsin counties of Buffalo and Pepin. It looks like they were
mostly active in Wisconsin, but must have put together a plat for Winona
while they were working so close by. The 1878 Winona County plat is a
large wall map (probably measuring 3’ x 5’), and besides land owners,
contains statistical information and some drawings of area
businesses/residences.
I’ve attached a copy of the newspaper article announcing the map’s
publication, which does a better job of explaining it.
Here in the Archives, we only have a poorly preserved half intact copy
of this map. The copy had been previously cut in half and mounted onto a
board, so we have all of the eastern townships, but nothing for the
western townships. Ultimately, we would like to obtain this map in any
form we can (digital, paper copies, or the original). I have already
contacted the Minnesota State Historical Society and the University of
Minnesota’s Map Library, but neither of them have ever seen or heard of
this map. I also can’t find it on the web or in WorldCat. I am running
out of ideas, and would appreciate any suggestions you might have.
Thank you,
