Miami Libraries once had large format printing available for users. Probably the most frequent use was for printing posters for conferences. Once in a great while a scan of a map or another image might have been done. Currently such printing is offered by the University Instructional Technology unit, through their printing center. There is a charge, but I am not sure just what the fee is. This is the only option for this type of printing for Libraries external customers.


We do offer large format plotter printing for internal use and staff. I have occasionally had maps printed in this way.


Finally, more than one large format scanner is available for Libraries users. This is mediated to the extent that a user might be unfamiliar with operating the equipment. There are two wide format scanners available. I have assisted users from time to time in scanning their own or Library copies of maps. I am probably the most frequent user, in making digital copies of various maps in the collections.

I see this go out every couple of years to the list and now it’s my turn for requesting updated information. If you respond to me personally, I can summarize and print to the list. I’m resending because as technology changes, the answers might change.



Do you have a large format printer/plotter available in your library for your map patrons?



If yes, is the use mediated?

How much do you charge?

How much use do you get for maps?

What do you see as the advantages/drawbacks?



Our situation is that we have a large format scanner. There is a plotter available to University affiliated patrons in another building. Patrons can take scans over on a USB or send via the Intranet and then go and pick them up later.



We are also a Federal Depository Library and many members of the public come in looking for paper topographic maps. With the most recent maps being electronic only, this can cause difficulties for members of the public. I can show them how to download the maps they want and give them instructions on where to go on campus for large format printing of the files. However, they often don’t have the technology and/or the time to acquire a paper copy that route.



It would be ideal if we could offer our patrons “one stop shopping” on copying and printing maps, but is it worth it is the decision we are looking at.
