Colleagues -

Since I'm retired (thankfully) let me say what everyone else is thinking:
isn't there an interesting confluence here that USGS decides to celebrate
their 125th Anniversary for Topographic Mapping at the same time that they
decide to cease their publication! Let me be the first to declare that, yes,
digital maps are indeed publications but at the same time let's really
proclaim that the USGS topographic map for non-commercial purposes has died.
It is an unfortunate situation and I'm just feeling fortunate that I have
some "standard" old topographic maps of my favorite areas set aside so that
I can still do some desktop research without a computer screen or paying
excessive pricing for digital copies.

Not quite a luddite but still appreciate paper ----
