Subject: Madagascar

I’m helping a researcher make a reference map in Arc of Madagascar for a
publication regarding 18^th and 19^th century slave trade. She’ll
provide relevant toponyms and I’ll take it from there. I’m running into
trouble finding the shapefiles for a basemap – boundary file, rivers and
other waterfeatures, perhaps DEM for hillshading. While I’ve found a
bit of this googling for open access material I haven’t found any
datasets with metadata, and I’m unfamiliar with the reputations of the
websites where I’ve found data. Does anyone know where I can get this
type of material (with metadata!)? If not open-access then what’s good
for proprietary data? And what is the background/rep of the website
MapCruzin? Appears to be people from UC-Santa Cruz? No FGDC with their
Madagascar data however.
