Subject: USGS 1:250K vs. V501/V502

Could anybody (point me to a source that would) explain the relationship
between the USGS series of
1:250K metric topos and the AMS V501/V502 series [aka "Eastern United
States (1:250,000)" and
"Western United States (1:250,000)"]?
Both Marcive and Worldcat seem to indicate that *both* series are
classed in SuDoc as I19.98. My
problem is that our AMS sheets are shelved by sheet # (e.g., NH 17-5),
whereas our USGS sheets--some
of which come folded--have only quadrangle names (e.g., Pueblo, CO),
which means they apparently
can't be interfiled with the AMS sheets.
Can anybody shed light on this?
Thank you.
