Sad news: the death of Claire Englander on July 15, 2013. She was a
long-time employee of the University of California, Berkeley. Claire is
perhaps best known for compiling the /Checklist of Online Vegetation and
Plant Distribution Maps
/(http://cluster3.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/vegmaps.html) and /Maps of
Nicaragua 1965-1987: a Cartobibliography
/(http://cluster3.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/nicaragua.html).
The following was provided by her family.

After a twenty-year fight with cancer, Claire entered hospice two weeks
ago and died peacefully today on a lovely estate high in the hills above
her adopted Oakland. Claire was only 67 but wished everyone to know
that she was ready. She was joined today and over the past few weeks by
her sisters Ellen and Ruth and her brothers Dave, Phil and Bob. We will
all miss her. Miss her kindness, toughness and bravery and her burning
desire for knowledge. In her last few days she passed up invitations to
watch silly programs on TV with us, preferring, instead, to read Jane
Austin or a text on vertebrate paleontology, or to write in her
journal. Please join us in wishing her a well-deserved peace.
