Just a guess on why the East and West directions on a compass rose would
be reversed from the usual (ie, East to the Left, West to the Right, with
North at the top): Maps of the sky show this same arrangement, on
the assumption that (as I understand it) you are laying on the ground
looking up at the sky. Possibly the compass in question was for
astronomical use??
