Spatial Effects is pleased to announce the launch of its web site at
http://www.spatial-effects.com/. While this is a "dot-com" enterprise,
the site is primarily devoted to discussing issues and approaches
concerning understanding, encoding, modeling and visualizing geodata.
Spatial Effects does not sell software or data; it is a consulting
practice focused on helping clients maximize returns on investments in
digital geospatial data, founded fifteen years ago by Dr. Geoffrey Dutton,
a pioneer in numerical cartography, spatial data modeling and
visualization, and geographic and geodata applications.
The extensive web site illustrates much of this background, and provides
detailed, illustrated summaries of recent work, geospatial facts and web
links, and discussion forums on topics of interest to visitors. It does
not carry commercial advertisements, but does provide visitors with a way
to place links to their own and related sites, and other ways to interact
with others.
To celebrate our grand opening, during the month of June Spatial Effects
will sponsor a "Geodata Debate" that site visitors can enter to win prizes.
The topic of the debate is:
RESOLVED: That common forms of digital geospatial data (including but
not limited to GIS database contents, data interchange formats, location
encoding conventions, metadata standards and attribute records) impede
applications of geodata and cloud the validity of results by failing
to note errors, hiding deficiencies, impoverishing spatial semantics,
and wasting uncountable hours of users' time to discover and rectify
or account for these shortcomings.
A response to this proposition may be either in favor of it or against it,
but not both. First and second prizes will be awarded for the best "pro"
and "con" arguments, and the winning entries will be published at
spatial-effects.com. All contributions must be original and not have been
published elsewhere. The contest closes at midnight, June 31, 1999. For
further details, a list of prizes and submission forms, please visit
http://www.spatial-effects.com/. Thanks.
