Subject: Fwd: question about your 33X examples on the cheat sheet

First, please note that Carolyn gave me permission to share the question
she posed to me this afternoon here on the list. I wanted to let
everyone who attended the MAGIRT RDA map cataloging workshop that Susan
Moore and I delivered at the American Library Association annual
conference in late June, and anyone else who subsequently found our PPT
slides from that presentation at the MAGIRT website, know that "...after
further review..." I believe the slide in question below is incorrect.
You will note in my reply to Carolyn that Table 6.1 in the RDA Toolkit
that shows the Content Type terms to use in MARC21 field 336 shows the
actual terms to use are in the singular, while the definition of each
allows for either case (that one may be describing either a single main
map or multiple main maps or sheets). Based on what I am seeing upon
re-reviewing this table that I first saw many months ago, I do believe
that in practice we should be using the Content Type (and also Carrier
Type) terms in their singular form and not in the plural as I have done
on occasion. My advice to Carolyn, therefore, was to use the singlular
form of the terms, and I wanted to share that same advice with others.

My apologies if I have mislead anyone in their pursuit of learning to
catalog cart. materials using RDA, and in particular the application of
these terms.

Sincerely,

Paige

Hi Carolyn,
To be honest, I've been using plural when the actual item is in
multiples (sheets) or when there's more than one main map. Now that I
have the Toolkit open to Table 6.1 at RDA 6.9.1.3 under content type
"cartographic image" (in the singular) the definition says "Cartographic
content expressed through line, shape, shading, etc., intended to be
perceived visually as a still image or images in two dimensions.
Includes maps, views, atlases, remote-sensing images, etc." Now I'm
seeing that perhaps I was wrong and we are to use the terms as provided
because the definition applies to either singular instances or plural
instances. My personal preference, under "tell it like it is" would be
to make the terms plural -- but I don't think I can stand on that based
on what I am seeing in the Toolkit.
This is a great question, would you mind if I posted it to MAPS-L along
with my response and just let folks know not to follow me down the wrong
path? And I'll change my ways on this end too. Now...at the local
level... Undecided
Paige

Paige,

I have a question about two of the examples you gave in your program in
June on your cheat sheets:

On the examples for multiple sheet maps, you gave the 336 $a as images
(in the plural) and the 338 $a sheets (in the plural). My question is,
is the plural form allowed, or was it just a slip up in typing? Are you
actually using plural forms when you catalog maps in RDA? I am planning
to use your cheat sheets that you so wonderfully provided for the rest
of us to train our catalogers to catalog cartographic materials in RDA.

Thanks so much.
