FYI

The interface seems remarkably responsive and intuitive. To download
you must draw a box using the beige box tool. Projection may be changed
from the default USA Contiguous Albers Equal Area Conic USGS to either
one of the applicable UTM zones or degrees lat/long WGS 84.

Output formats are .tiff or .kml

David D. Kleweno, Director

NASS Launches New Geospatial Data Service
2010 Crop Year Ag Land Cover Now Available

To provide easier access to geospatial satellite products, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS)
today announced the launch of CropScape, a new cropland exploring service.
CropScape provides data users access to a variety of new resources and
information, including the just released 2010 cropland data layer (CDL) for
Michigan and other states. This new service offers advanced tools such as
interactive visualization, web-based data dissemination and geospatial
queries, automated data delivery to systems such as Google Earth.

"CropScape delivers data visualization tools directly into the hands of the
agricultural community without the need for specialized expertise, GIS
software or high end computers," said Dave Kleweno, director of USDA - NASS,
Michigan Field Office. "This information can be used for addressing issues
related to agricultural sustainability, land cover monitoring, biodiversity
and extreme events such as flooding, drought and hail storm assessment."

NASS produced the 2010 CDL using satellite image observations at 30-meter
(0.22 acres per pixel) resolution and collected from the Resourcesat-1
Advanced Wide Field Sensor (AWiFS) and Landsat Thematic Mapper. The
collection of images was categorized using on-the-ground farm information
including field location, crop type, elevation, tree canopy and urban
infrastructure. All prior CDL products dating back to 1997 are also
hosted by
CropScape.

CDL information is available for Michigan, starting in 2007. The latest
2010
product was produced as part of a partnership between Michigan State
University, the Michigan Department of Agriculture, and USDA - NASS,
Michigan
Field Office. This collaboration reflects the continued commitment NASS has
to improve service and information on agricultural production,
sustainability, and food security.

CropScape is operated by NASS's Research and Development Division and
hosted
and maintained by the Center for Spatial Information Science and Systems at
George Mason University. For more information about CropScape, and the
Cropland Data Layer visit http://nassgeodata.gmu.edu/CropScape. At the
bottom of the website you will find several options for this product (see
below). If you click on the Demo a helpful video will provide a product
overview. Please feel free to let us know how we can improve and make this
product more useful.
