Hello All,
While I like having the MAPS-L Facebook page and believe it can serve a
different purpose than the MAPS-L listserv, I do agree with others that
it shouldn't serve as a redundant mailing of MAPS-L posts. Until there
is agreement on that point, those who have the same opinion as Nat,
Angie, and me, can go to the button in the upper right-hand corner of
the page labeled "Edit Settings" and 1) uncheck "Also send an email to:
[log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>" and pick your choice of options by
clicking on "To turn off all group emails, edit your notifications
settings <http://www.facebook.com/editaccount.php?notifications>" and 2)
uncheck "Send me group chat messages." That should take care of most
of the irritations people are voicing.
But I do not think everyone should have to do this and because it Is an
"Open Group
<http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_234712523210223#> —
[log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>" I would be
more hesitant to post messages on the Facebook page, given that once
posted, I lose all control over a message. I think a little debate
about the being an "Open" or "Closed" group would be healthy.
Let's not blame Susan, however, for taking the initiative to set up the
Group on Facebook. Let's just collaboratively focus its purpose and
objectives.
Best,
Brent

Hi Everyone,
I agree with Nate. I'm not sure what the value is of re-posting all the
Maps-L postings to facebook. I'm not sure what role facebook will play
but I'm not enjoying the redundancy. This is certainly experimental and
will become whatever we - as a group of 1,000 subscribers - make it.
For now, feel free to post announcement type things - jobs, events,
collections, etc. to facebook but avoid the re-posting of the personal
comments and opinions. Discussion and chatter at facebook is certainly
allowed as well though there's been NONE of that yet. Maybe the
facebook
page should just be a chance for members of the Maps-L community to get
to know one another better - rather than an extension of the Maps-L
email list. Something to consider.
Sue, will you be so kind as to remove Nate's comments from the facebook
page?
Angie

OK, having now experienced it, I'm going to ask that postings on MAPS-L
specifically not be echoed to the Facebook page. I'm absolutely
comfortable with the comment I made in response to Hudson Maps' closing
going out to the email list; I'm less comfortable with it being
broadcast to everybody and their uncle on Facebook. I still support
having MAPS-L auxilliarly on Facebook, but I'd like what gets posted
here to stay on here without permission (or a "feel free to repost"
note
in the email itself).
Is this unreasonable?
