Summary Description:	The Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) is seeking candidates for a full-time Associate Research Scholar as part of the Andrew Mellon Foundation funded initiative in Architecture, Urbanism and the Humanities. The position, within the School's Center for Spatial Research (CSR), will report to the Director of the CSR, and will conduct research related to the Center's current focus, Conflict Urbanism.. The candidate must have a background in a field of the Humanities and be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary setting with researchers from diverse spheres such as Architecture and Urbanism, Art History, Anthropology, English, or History, and others. This appointment is for two years. 

Candidates must demonstrate literacy in the Digital Humanities with a focus on either Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or Data Visualization in the context of research in the Humanities. The incumbent will be an active contributor to the research projects already underway at the CSR. Furthermore the candidate will lead their own research project on Conflict Urbanism over the course of their appointment. This project will be developed in coordination with the Director of the CSR. This project should be completed during the incumbent's tenure with the CSR and the project will be eligible for assistance by student researchers. The work of the research associate will be published on the CSR website in a media or platform specific to the kind of work they are producing. In addition the incumbent will be responsible for finding further avenues for publication. 

In addition to research responsibilities the incumbent will teach one of three possible lab-oriented courses run by CSR, covering either Data Visualization for Architecture, Urbanism, and the Humanities or Mapping for Architecture, Urbanism, and the Humanities or collaborative teaching in Conflict Urbanism. The interdisciplinary courses are aimed at equipping students from a diverse set of fields with key interdisciplinary research methods as well as data literacy for urban research. The course will use a "flipped classroom" model. The incumbent will be responsible for the creation of web tutorials specific to a course. 

Candidates are expected to have established their ability to conduct original, independent research in urban humanities. The associate research scholars' qualifications and contributions to their fields of research must be equivalent to those of an assistant professor.

Minimum Qualifications:

All applicants MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered for the position.	Candidates must have a Master's degree or the equivalent, and one to three years of related work experience. Master's level training in architecture, geography, urban planning, or a related field is greatly preferred. 

Candidates will have the ability to do collaborative and cross-disciplinary research and ability to convey specialized knowledge to students and faculty working in the Center. Candidates should demonstrate ability to show how their own fields of specialty, if outside of architecture, intersect with or bring new tools and research methods to architectural design and/or theory. 

Knowledge of a range (but not all) of the following tools is expected from the candidate: GIS (ESRI and Open Source), conceptual familiarity with spatial data sets and sources of GIS data, Leaflet, Mapbox, Processing, Python, Javascript, and/or D3 HTML5, CSS, Adobe Suite, APIs, R. A willingness to learn new software and most up to date tools is a requirement of the job.  
Preferred Qualifications:	Preferred qualifications include publication in recognized media and conference presentations.
