It's good to know that the format decisions I made recently for our
historic topo maps archive at
http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/gis/historictopos.html are pretty much in
agreement with the comments here.
I'll just add that I decided to provide both a lossy and lossless JPG
2000 version of each scan. The lossless version is still at least 40%
smaller sized than the original TIFF, and is beautiful when plotted.
Resolution loss with the lossy version is barely noticeable on-screen
although the rectificaton process distorts the pixels slightly.
MrSID will be around for a long time, but for future projects, I think
JPG 2000 is a great way to go.
