1. ART+SCIENCE: a conversation with Dan Jay
Wednesday, September 26 at Noon
Lamar Dodd Building Room S160

Dan Jay is a professor and dean of the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at Tufts University in Boston, MA. For 30 years he has led parallel careers in science and art and acted as a conduit between the two fields.

"As a society we have segregated art and science such that fields have become overly specialized and do not speak to the vast majority of society. This was not always so and I seek to catalyze a reunification of knowledge or at least an appreciation that disciplines can inform each other in novel ways."

8. Opportunity: 4'33" Competition
Deadline: Wednesday, October 3 at 5 PM
https://arts.uga.edu/433/

2018 Spotlight on Arts Scholarship Competition

This competition highlights scholarly research by UGA students about any art form or combination of art forms, including (but not restricted to): visual art, music, theatre, dance, film, literature, media arts, or performance art. The focus is on historical, theoretical, and critical research about art, as opposed to original works of art created by the students.

The competition provides an opportunity for students to present their research in a clear and accessible way to students, faculty, administrators, and alumni throughout the university. Students may present their research in one of two ways:

4'33" Thesis Presentations. Students will present an oral presentation about their research, no longer than four minutes and thirty three seconds in length, accompanied by Powerpoint slides as necessary. (Note that the media should be used to support and illustrate the live presentation, not as a substitute for it.) Eligibility: Any graduate student, or any undergraduate student working on a CURO project, who is conducting scholarly research about art or artists in any discipline is eligible to apply.

The 4'33" Thesis Competition will be held on Wednesday, November 7, from 7:00-8:30 pm in the Georgia Museum of Art Auditorium. The first prize winner will receive $433.

4'33 Poster Exhibit. Students create an exhibit about their research that either can be mounted on the wall or fits on a 4' x 3' section of a table. The exhibits will typically consist of a poster-board display, but can include other visual aids. If the exhibit includes audio and/or video, a playback device and headphone must be provided; power outlets will be available. Eligibility: Any graduate student, or any undergraduate student working on a CURO project, who is conducting scholarly research about art or artists in any discipline is eligible to apply.

The 4'33 Poster Exhibit will be on display from Thursday, November 1 through Wednesday, November 7 in the Georgia Museum of Art Education Center. The exhibit opening will coincide with the President's Spotlight on the Arts Reception and the opening for the 2018 National Conference of the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities, hosted on our campus this year. The 4'33" Poster Competition judging will be held on Wednesday, November 7 from 5:00-7:00 pm in the Georgia Museum of Art Education Center. Students must be present during this time to present their poster and answer questions. Three $150 prizes will be awarded in three categories: Most Effective Communication, Most Innovative Research, and Most Creative Presentation. Students may win in more than one category.

To apply: On no more than 1 typed page, provide your full name, department, degree program, name of faculty advisor, and a summary of your research project that it clearly explains the significance and originality of your research to both specialized and non-specialists in your area. E-mail your application to Camie Williams at [log in to unmask]

10. a2ru National Conference
November 1-3
University of Georgia
https://www.a2ru.org/events/2018-national-conference/

UGA will host the 2018 National Conference for the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) on the theme of "Arts Environments: Design, Resilience, and Sustainability." The conference will be held in partnership with the UGA Arts Council and in conjunction with the November Spotlight on the Arts festival.

The 2018 theme, Arts Environments: Design, Resilience, and Sustainability, is an invitation to explore the relationship between creativity and diverse cultural locations, by framing discussions about design, resilience, and sustainability in context of interdisciplinary artistic and environmental practice. The theme offers an opportunity to think broadly about the ecology of the arts and their environments, in terms of performance, design, and engineering. A land and sea grant institution inextricable from the town of Athens and the broader ecologies of Georgia and the Southeast, the University of Georgia will provide a rich context for thinking creatively about Arts Environments globally.

Call for a2ru Conference Volunteers

Students who are interested in volunteering during the conference should contact Mark Callahan, [log in to unmask] All student volunteers who satisfy volunteer requirements will have free access to conference events.
