SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL TRAINING (SIT) SCHOLARSHIP:
University of Georgia students interested in participating in programs
sponsored by the School for International Training (SIT) can now apply
for a new scholarship opportunity. Funding from the scholarship comes
from SIT, the STAR Initiative, and the UGA Foundation. Awards will range
from $1,000-$4,000, and will be available starting with Spring 2005
programs.
SIT programs offer semester-length field based instruction in a variety
of different countries. Each program focuses on a specific theme, such
as Arts and Culture, Culture, Development, and Social Justice, Natural
and Cultural Ecology, Sexuality, Gender and Identity, Gender and
Development, Public Health, etc. Each program offers a full-load of 16
credits that combine a thematic seminar, instruction in field-based
research and and independent study project.

BRIDGING SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDY ABROAD IN JAPAN:
The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project Clearinghouse
is currently accepting scholarship applications for students studying
abroad in Japan during Spring 2005.
--Application Deadline: October 5, 2004
--Award: $2,500 (semester programs) / $4,000 (year programs)
Scholarships provided through support of the Association of Teachers of
Japanese (ATJ) and the US - Japan Bridging Foundation. --Eligibilty:
Undergraduate level, US citizenship, with major in any field who are

ELIZABETH SUZANNE SCHAEFER STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP
The Office of International Education is pleased to announce
the application deadline for the Elizabeth Suzanne Schaefer
Scholarship in support of UGA students who will study abroad
in Spring 2005 or Summer 2005.
--Application Deadline: October 15, 2004
--Award: $500 scholarships provided through support of the
Schaefer-Sammons family and the UGA Foundation.
--Eligibilty: UGA undergraduates attending a UGA study
abroad or exchange program or an external study abroad (not
sponsored by UGA). 3.0 minimum GPA required. Preference
will be given for academic merit, applicants from groups
that are under-represented in study abroad (i.e. students of
color, first generation college students, students from
rural Georgia, math/science majors), participation in
programs with language/cultural immersion component or
located in a under-represented geographic regions (i.e.
outside of Western Europe).

Additional study abroad scholarships are also available

GILMAN STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP (for Pell Grant Recipients):
--Application Deadline: September 22, 2004
--Award: up to $5,000. Award amounts will vary depending on
the length of study and student need with the average award
being $4,000.
--Eligibility: Candidates must be U.S. citizens and
undergraduates who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding
at 2-year or 4-year undergraduate colleges or universities
and are planning to study abroad this Spring. Gilman Award
recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and
requires students to develop a follow-up service project at
home campus/community after the study abroad program.

variety of academic fields offered in Europe, Latin America
and Australia)
--DiS: $1500 discount (programs in International Business
and Economics, Marine Biology, Molecular Biology and
Genetics, Architecture, Education, and Humanities and
Sciences, located in Copenhagen, Denmark)
--Syracuse University: $1,000 (summer programs in a wide
variety of academic fields in Europe, Latin America, and
Asia)

STUDY ABROAD STORIES WANTED FOR BOOK:
Pearson Venture Group is currently accepting study abroad stories for
the "From a Backpack" series travel books. They are seeking
first-personmust-tell study abroad stories from students. Based on the
success of the first book, EUROPE FROM A BACKPACK, they are accepting
stories for the following titles:
- WESTERN EUROPE FROM A BACKPACK
- ITALY FROM A BACKPACK
- SPAIN FROM A BACKPACK
- FRANCE FROM A BACKPACK
The deadline for submission is December 1, 2004. Compensation is $100

GLIMPSE MAGAZING WRITING AND PHOTO CONTEST:
Glimpse Magazine is excited to announce their two upcoming fall
contests, open to both study abroad and international students:
WRITING CONTEST:
"Foregone Conclusions"
Do all Australians really surf? Do all Americans really want to rule the
world? The Fall 2004 Writing Contest, "Foregone Conclusions," asks
students to think about the cultural preconceptions that they carried
with them into their host countries and/or the assumptions that locals
in their host countries make about them. How accurate are these
preconceptions, and to what extent have they been challenged or disproved?
PHOTO CONTEST:
"A Day's Work"
From the butcher to the baker to the candlestick maker ... our Fall
2004 Photo Contest calls for compelling photographs of people in their
work environments around the world. Students are asked to submit one
photograph and a brief description of what the work depicted involves
and how it fits into the society's class structure.
The DEADLINE for both contests is October 22.

Here's a great opportunity to improve your Spanish and learn about Latin
American culture in XALAPA, MEXICO at the Universidad Veracruzana!
Students with advanced proficiency in Spanish may instead enroll in
regular university classes, taught in Spanish, together with local
Veracruzana students. Course options include anthropology, archaeology,
agriculture, biology, business, dance, engineering, history, literature,
linguistics, math, music, psychology, science, sociology, theatre &
veterinary medicine.
