Dale and others , I was collecting on the Salish Sea (Puget Sound) near Bremerton on June 25 (a minus 3.8' tide) and the next day near Port Hadlock- June 26th, (minus 3.5' tide) at the beginning of the June heat wave. It was 95 F on the beach at 2:00 PM on June 26th as we were leaving and by the time I arrived home in Olympia it was 101 F. the next day we set an all-time record of 108 F! On June 25th on a beach which is usually home to many large moon snails, we saw almost none at all. Maybe they had retreated into deeper water or buried deeply in the muddy beach? On June 26th we saw "a great number of dead large bivalves (gaper clams, softshell clams and cockles) on the beach as we were leaving. So, the heat took a major toll on large bivalves. I have never seen a moon snail shed its shell. Bert Bartleson, Olympia

Thanks, Dale. I get the feeling we’re all racing towards the edge of the cliff without the recognition of the seriousness of the threat.

Moon snails crawling out of their shells…! Can anyone confirm that they’ve seen gastropods literally leave their shells?

I apologize for delaying this for several months, and I don't recall anyone from the list sending this.
My sister lives on the Olympic peninsula and we talked about the extraordinary heat they suffered at the time, but I didn't check my email until now.
You'll have to click on the link, and I think you'll find it terrifying.
