Linda, I'm currently working through a similar problem with a collection mainly from the PNW and California. I've been using Eddie Hardy's "Gastropods.com" to search for common names. Try using the labels you have with scientific names. One of them may provide the item you are looking for. Hardy's site also lists general areas where the species are found.

Don’t know Mark but we lived lived in Okinawa. I have one Compendium of Seashells and its list of common names is brief. Our shell library is boxed due to hurricane Michael damage. Tried on line and all I can come up with is various knives with abalone inlaid handles. I am familiar with Damascus steel but that does not helping this case. Can anyone help?
