Hello, 

Recently while perusing an online offering of a scallop, i noticed a description as to how the seller measured his shell...which i have pasted in below....is this the generally accepted method for scallops and/or any other bivalves? rightly or wrongly i always measured scallops from the tip of the umbo to the opposite (far) edge of the shell, and in the other direction, across the widest part of the shell (perpendicular to the first measurement i described). 

The online listing states this:


Shells are measured at the widest part as according to world record rules. That includes spines, wings, and siphonal canals. Pectens would be measured from the tip off the wing to the edge of the shell if that dimension is greater than the width

as the seller quotes 'world record rules' is that the 'accepted' method for curatorial purposes?
